This project is about resilience, how we have adapted and used rituals, humour, and humanity to navigate these dark times, in the way that people always have.
The Duchas Schools Folklore Collection took place less than 20 years after the Spanish Flu and gave a unique insight into life during that time. The stories recorded there are so similar to our experience of Covid, yet have largely been forgotten. From schools closing, reopening and closing again to dances and weddings resulting in clusters and overworked doctors and nurses succumbing to the virus.
The participants in this project, young & old, contributed 6 word stories about their experience of the Pandemic, relating them to the stories in the Duchas Folklore Project, and particularly focussing on our resilience. A selection of these phrases have been composed into a song by Finn Nichol, performed by the Birr Young Voices Choir, under the musical direction of Anne Mc Cambridge and Triona Walsh., & the additional contributions are recorded here.
